Some people might raise an eyebrow at Richard Zoet’s decision to quit his steady senior corporate job at the age of 46 to start up his own company. But he calls it the most liberating thing he has ever done.Until September 2007, Richard Zoet was Managing Director of the van den Bergh Group, a conglomerate of trading houses specialized in the global trade in dairy ingredients, having spent 18 years climbing the ladder at the buoyant dairy trading multinational.
He is now the shareholder of Esyllt b.v., a Dutch based consultancy firm with full focus on business strategy development and interim management. “Building your own business is no less time-consuming than a senior-level salaried post, but offers many more advantages”, he states.
In the meantime he also embarked on an MBA at one of Europe’s leading business schools, TiasNimbas. Life long learning put in practice, indeed.

“There is no question that in starting a new venture or academic study you have to put in maximum effort and make lots of compromises, but the difference is: whatever value you create in that process is your own value. What counts in the end is a sound balance in “life” values like entrepreneurship, study, personal development and family. This demands choice-making and creating clarity at all levels.” |
